The ginkgo tree of Guryang-ri is estimated to be about 550 years old, with a trunk circumference at breast height of 8.37 m and a height of 22.5 m. It stands today amid the paddies and fields of Jungni village in Guryang-ri, and about a third of its crown was damaged by Typhoon Maemi in 2003. It is said that about 500 years ago, when a man named Yi Pan-yun retired from office and came down to settle here, he brought the tree from Seoul and planted it beside the pond of his house; a legend also tells that women unable to bear sons could conceive one by praying devotedly at a rotted hollow at the tree's base. The Ginkgo Tree of Guryang-ri, Ulju, has lived alongside our ancestors across a long span of years, and as material of great folkloric and cultural value it is designated and protected as a natural monument.
