Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe Manchurian trout is a member of the salmon family and a freshwater fish that lives in cold water below 20°C. Its body is yellowish-brown, with irregular dark purplish-brown markings scattered over the head, body and back, while the belly is close to white. When spawning, its whole body turns a deep red, and the dorsal and pectoral fins take on a beautiful iridescent sheen. It feeds on aquatic insects and small fish. In Korea it is found in the upper reaches of the Amnokgang, Dumangang, Cheongcheongang, Daedonggang, Hangang and Nakdonggang rivers. In summer it lives in the coolest waters furthest upstream, and in winter it moves down to the middle reaches to pass the season. The habitat at Seokpo-myeon, Bonghwa is the southernmost place in the world where Manchurian trout live, and as one of the areas with the best-developed forest, offering the finest environment for the species, it has been designated and protected as a natural monument.
