The macropodous daphniphyllum grows in Korea as well as in China and Japan. In Korea it is found in warm regions such as the southern coastal areas, Jeju Island, and Naejangsan and Baegunsan Mountains in Jeolla-do. In Sino-Korean it is also called gyoyangmok, meaning that after new leaves appear, the previous year's leaves fall away — in other words, the tree hands over its place and departs. It makes a fine garden tree and is also well known as a street tree. The Population of Macropodous Daphniphyllum in Naejangsan Mountain lies on the path leading up to the peak that stands in front of Naejangsa Temple. Large specimens of this tree are rarely seen in Korea, and because its leaves resemble those of manbyeongcho, a tree used in traditional medicine, local people also call it manbyeongcho. The Population of Macropodous Daphniphyllum in Naejangsan Mountain is recognised for its academic value as the northern limit of the species' natural distribution, and it is accordingly designated and protected as a natural monument.
