Japanese Torreya of Sangman-ri, Jindo
진도 상만리 비자나무 · 珍島 上萬里 비자나무

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe Japanese torreya grows south of Naejangsan Mountain in Korea and also in Japan. Because of its beautiful shape it is often planted around villages, and its nuts are used to make a vermifuge and a remedy for constipation, or are pressed for oil. The Japanese torreya of Sangman-ri is estimated to be around 600 years old (at the time of its designation), standing 8.5m tall with a trunk circumference of 6.95m at chest height. Its densely growing branches cast good shade, so the tree also serves as a resting spot. It is said to have stood within the grounds of Guamsa Temple, which was built 1,000 years ago. Villagers believe that because this tree protects people, no one has ever been badly hurt even after falling from it. The Japanese torreya of Sangman-ri, Jindo, served our ancestors both as a resting place and as a source of vermifuge medicine, and as a tree that has lived for a very long time it also holds great biological value. For these reasons it is designated and protected as a Natural Monument.
