The Chinese Honey Locust at Dongnakdang House is estimated to be about 470 years old, standing 14.5 m tall with a girth of 4.90 m (measured 62 cm above the ground). It grows within the fence of Dongnakdang House at Oksanseowon Confucian Academy, surrounded by persimmon trees. Although the tree is very beautiful in form, only its base and two branches remain alive, so its overall condition is poor. It is said to have been planted in 1532, the 27th year of King Jungjong of Joseon, when Yi Eon-jeok, who had briefly left office and returned to his hometown, built Dongnakdang House and devoted himself to scholarship there; the seed is said to have come from a friend who had travelled to China as an envoy. As an old and rare tree, the Chinese Honey Locust at Dongnakdang House, Gyeongju, has great value for biological conservation. It also carries considerable cultural value in showing the history of exchange between Korea and China as well as the history of Dongnakdang House itself, and it is therefore designated and protected as a natural monument.
