The population of golden rain trees on Anmyeondo Island lies on the shore of Bangpo Beach, 3 km from Anmyeon-eup. The stand measures 120 m in length and about 15 m in width, with a pebble-covered floor; some 200 trees, each 4-5 m tall, grow here and serve as a windbreak that shields the area from sea winds. Besides golden rain trees, various other plants grow here together, including hornbeam, Korean oak and Amur maple. There are two accounts of how this population came to be here. Since the centre of the golden rain tree's distribution is known to be in China, one theory holds that seeds from trees growing inland in China were carried here by ocean currents and took root as a stand; the other holds that the species is in fact native to Korea, since it is also found along the Yellow Sea coast as well as around Yeongil Bay on Donghae, the East Sea. The population of golden rain trees on Anmyeondo Island, Taean, is one of the rare cases in Korea where the species grows naturally, and as a tree not commonly seen it holds high scientific research value; it is therefore designated and protected as a natural monument.
