Cheonhodonggul Cave, Iksan
익산 천호동굴 · 益山 天壺洞窟

Cheonhodonggul Cave lies at the foot of Cheonhosan Mountain; it is 680m long in total and formed of limestone. Inside the cave, formations such as icicle-like stalactites, stalagmites rising up from the floor, and stone pillars formed where stalactites and stalagmites meet have developed extensively. In particular, at the centre of a large chamber known as "Sujeonggung" (Crystal Palace), about 30m high and 15m wide, a huge stalagmite more than 20m tall rises up, with a diameter reaching 5m. Clear water flows along one corner of the cave floor, and after rain the volume increases enough to form a waterfall. Many cave-dwelling creatures live here, including bats as well as cave crickets, beetles and springtails. Cheonhodonggul Cave is currently designated a restricted-access area to protect its formations, and entry for management or academic purposes requires permission from the Administrator of the Korea Heritage Service.
