A virgin forest (wonsirim) is a forest that has kept its natural state for a long time, having suffered no serious damage and having remained free of human interference. The Virgin Forest on Seonginbong Peak, Ulleung is centred on the area near the summit of Seonginbong Peak on Ulleungdo Island. It consists of Ulleung beech forest interspersed with island dwarf bamboo, together with trees found only on Ulleungdo, such as hemlock and Ulleung maple. Rare plants that grow wild only in this place, including Ulleung liverleaf, Ulleung lily and seombadi, also grow within the forest. The Virgin Forest on Seonginbong Peak, Ulleung has survived because the local population is small and the area has seen almost no human access. Recently, however, as Ulleungdo has developed as a tourist destination, visitors have begun coming and roads have been built, placing the forest at risk of damage. The Virgin Forest on Seonginbong Peak, Ulleung is an extremely valuable resource as a rare forest, and because it hosts many rare species of tree and herbaceous plant found only on Ulleungdo, it is designated and protected as a natural monument.
