Chinese juniper grows in the central and southern regions of Korea, as well as on Ulleungdo Island and in Japan, and is also known by the names sangnamu and nosongnamu. The tree has a strong fragrance and is used as incense material burned during ancestral rites, and it is widely planted as an ornamental tree in gardens and parks. The Chinese Juniper of Changdeokgung Palace is estimated to be about 750 years old. Although damaged by a typhoon in 2010, it stands 4.7 m tall with a girth at breast height of 3.5 m. It originally had one branch extending in each of the four cardinal directions, but the southern branch has since been cut off, the northern branch has died, and the eastern branch has grown into a twisted, misshapen form. The overall shape of the tree resembles a dragon ascending to the sky. Having been cared for and cherished by our ancestors over a long period of time, the Chinese Juniper of Changdeokgung Palace holds great value as a cultural resource and is designated and protected as a Natural Monument.
