Rain Prints in Haman Formation, Seodong-ri, Uiryeong
의령 서동리 백악기 빗방울자국 · 宜寧 西洞里 白堊紀 빗방울자국

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe Rain Prints in Haman Formation, Seodong-ri, Uiryeong survive on the surface of a rock about 2 m high beside a road, where numerous raindrop impressions overlap one another. The impressions are roughly round in shape, 8–15 mm in diameter and less than 1 mm deep. The rock layer bearing these impressions formed about 100 million years ago: at the time, drought had temporarily lowered the water level of a lake, exposing sediment that had accumulated on the lake bed, and the impact of raindrops falling onto this surface left the impressions. After the surface of this sediment dried and new sediment was deposited over it, the layers hardened into rock over a long period of time. Rain prints are interpreted as evidence of a dry climate; they have been found in rock strata in various parts of the world, but they remain very rare. * The name has been changed from "Rain Prints in the Haman Formation, Seodong-ri, Uiryeong" to "Rain Prints of the Cretaceous, Seodong-ri, Uiryeong" (announced 26 July 2021).
