Korean Berchemia of Songnisan Mountain, Boeun
보은 속리산 망개나무 · 報恩 俗離山 망개나무

Korean berchemia is a rare species found sparsely in Korea, China and Japan; it has very beautiful yellow autumn foliage and generally grows in warm locations. Its reproductive capacity is very weak, but once it sprouts it grows well. The leaves are long and oval, and the flowers bloom yellow in June. The fruit is oval and ripens red in August. The Korean Berchemia of Songnisan Mountain, Boeun is estimated to be about 300 years old, standing 17.5 m tall with a girth at breast height of 1.5 m. The original Korean berchemia designated as a Natural Monument on Songnisan Mountain withered and died after many people broke off its branches, following a mistaken belief that touching a branch would bring the birth of a son; the tree now designated in its place grows beside a stream. Because of its weak reproductive capacity, Korean berchemia is a rare species, and this specimen on Songnisan Mountain, Boeun is one of the largest of its kind growing in Korea; for its high biological conservation value it is designated and protected as a Natural Monument.
