Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krEgrets breed widely across the world, from tropical to temperate regions, and in Korea they breed throughout the country except in the highland areas of Baekdusan Mountain. They can be seen at rivers, lakes and tidal flats from early spring to late autumn, and they build their nests mainly in pine and ginkgo trees. The grey heron is the largest bird among Korea's egret family, and is a summer visitor that breeds across the whole country; a small number remain year-round as residents wintering in the southern regions and on islands. Grey herons live in rice paddies, rivers, coasts and tidal flats, feeding on frogs, fish and snakes. At the breeding ground beside the reservoir in front of the village of Yongwol-ri, Muan, about 500 grey herons nest and breed in four hackberry trees. In addition, at the breeding ground on Cheongnyongsan Mountain in front of the village, around 600 egrets and grey herons breed together in a colony. The breeding ground for egrets and grey herons in Yongwol-ri, Muan is one of the places in Korea where the largest numbers of egrets and grey herons breed, and it is therefore designated and protected as a natural monument.
