영월 고씨굴 · 寧越 高氏窟

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krGossigul Cave, Yeongwol is located in the upper reaches of the Namhangang River, and is said to have gained its name because a family named Go hid there to escape danger during the Imjin War (the Japanese invasions of Korea, 1592–1598). The cave is about 3 km long in total, and its shape is roughly like a large, stretched-out letter W. It was formed around 400 to 500 million years ago and is made of limestone. The temperature inside the cave stays around 15℃ throughout the year, while the water temperature is 5.3℃. Inside Gossigul Cave, icicle-shaped stalactites and stalagmites rising up from the floor are widely distributed, and the cave is home to insects of the genus Galloisiana, once believed to survive only in fossil form. Gossigul Cave, Yeongwol has well-developed stalactites and stalagmites, and compared with other caves it is home to many rare creatures that live only within caves.
