Eoreumgol Ice Valley in Nammyeong-ri, Miryang lies in the northern valley of the ridge that runs northeast from Cheonhwangsan Mountain. The entrance to the valley sits at an elevation of about 320m, and its upper end at about 1,000m. Three sides of the valley - east, west and north - are formed by cliffs, and the northern side is a field of boulders. Generally from March or April onwards, ice begins to form in cracks in the rock, reaching its greatest extent from late July to early August; in winter, warm air issues from the same crevices where the ice had formed, so that even the stream in the valley does not freeze. This is said to occur because of the many fissures within the rock, and the phenomenon is known as 'the mystery of Miryang'. Such ice-valley phenomena are rare and have also been reported at Pocheon, Danyang, Uiseong and Jeong Seon. Various theories have been proposed to explain the principle behind this summer freezing, but none has been clearly established, and the cause may only be resolved through continued research. The natural phenomenon seen at the ice valley in Nammyeong-ri, Miryang is exceptionally rare and holds great academic value for research in meteorology, geology and related fields.
