Chinese juniper is found in the central and southern parts of Korea, as well as on Ulleungdo Island and in Japan, and is also known by other names such as sangnamu or nosongnamu. The tree has a strong fragrance and its wood has been used as incense in ancestral rites; it is also widely planted as an ornamental tree in gardens and parks. The Chinese Juniper of Yangji-ri, Yangju is estimated to be about 500 years old, stands 12.6m tall, and has a girth at breast height of 5.1m. Its main trunk rises for about 2m before dividing into seven branches that spread out in all directions. The tree is said to have grown from one planted beside the grave of an ancestor of the Geochang Sin clan, and a memorial stone recording the history of the Sin family stands nearby. The Chinese Juniper of Yangji-ri, Yangju is valuable both as material for understanding the folk culture of ancestor veneration among the Korean people, and, as an old and large specimen of its kind, for its biological conservation value; it is accordingly designated and protected as a natural monument.
