The yew is found in Korea, Japan, Manchuria and the southern part of the Russian Far East. In Korea it grows mainly in high mountainous areas and cold regions such as Sobaeksan, Taebaeksan, Odaesan and Seoraksan mountains, and because of its beautiful form it is widely planted as an ornamental tree. The population of spreading yews in Sobaeksan Mountain consists of old yew trees growing together, their trunks twisted and their side branches curving up and down to give them a striking appearance. Most of the trees are about 7m tall; their girth is not uniform, but branches spread out in all directions from around 2m up. This is thought to be caused by strong wind and heavy snow. Cherry trees, hazel trees and Mongolian oaks grow nearby, and near the ridge there is a colony of modemipul, a plant species endemic to Korea. The population of spreading yews in Sobaeksan Mountain is Korea's representative yew population and holds high biological conservation value, and is therefore designated and protected as a natural monument.
