Migratory birds are birds that move seasonally between breeding grounds and wintering areas. A bird that breeds in the north and comes to Korea for the winter is called a winter bird, while one that flies from the south in spring to breed and returns south in autumn is called a summer bird. There are also passage migrants and wandering birds. Korea's representative migratory birds include summer birds such as the common cuckoo, egret and dollarbird, and winter birds such as geese, eagles, cranes and owls. The migratory bird sanctuary at Cheontong-ri, Cheorwon lies in the middle of the Cheorwon plain. In winter, warm water flowing up from underground keeps the area from freezing, giving migratory birds excellent conditions in which to find water and food. From mid-September to mid-October each year, large numbers of winter migratory birds such as red-crowned cranes, white-naped cranes and geese arrive from Siberia to spend the winter here, while many other winter migrants pause to rest here on their way to warmer regions such as Japan. Birds of prey such as eagles can also be seen in winter, and precious birds such as red-crowned and white-naped cranes come to winter here; white-naped and hooded cranes that winter in Japan also pass through this site on their way north. The migratory bird sanctuary at Cheontong-ri, Cheorwon is of great importance as an international stopover for migratory birds situated between Russia, China and Japan, and, as it represents Korea's inland wintering grounds for migratory birds, it is designated and protected as a natural monument.
