Baengnyongdonggul Cave in Pyeongchang is a limestone cave in a cliff at the foot of Baegunsan Mountain, beside the Donggang River, a tributary of the Namhangang River. The cave is about 1,875 metres long in total, consisting of one main passage and three branch passages, with the main passage forming a horizontal cave running east to west. Inside the cave, a wide variety of speleothems -- the mineral formations built up by dripping and flowing water, including soda-straw stalactites, stalactites, stalagmites, columns, flowstone, cave coral, cave shields, helictites, cave popcorn, curtains and rimstone pools -- are spectacularly arrayed like an underground palace. Particularly distinctive are stalagmites shaped like a traditional conical hat and others shaped like a fried egg. Baengnyongdonggul Cave has very great academic and scenic value for its diverse speleothems, cave-dwelling organisms and the micro-landforms within it.
