KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

The Korean berchemia is a rare species growing sparsely in Korea, China, Japan and elsewhere, prized for its very beautiful yellow autumn foliage, and generally found in warm locations. Its powers of reproduction are very weak, but once a seedling takes root it grows well. Its leaves are long and oval, and its flowers bloom yellow in June. Its fruit is oval and ripens red in August. The Korean berchemias at Sadam-ri, Goesan, grow near valleys close to Songnisan National Park, in streamside ground covered with coarse stones and little soil, and in crevices between rocks. The natural habitat of Korean berchemias in Sadam-ri, Goesan, is one of Korea's representative sites for this species, and its high biological conservation value has led to its designation and protection as a natural monument.
