The muku tree is a tall tree of the elm family that grows widely near rivers and villages in warm regions along the west coast, extending as far as Gyeonggi Province. Along with black pine and hackberry, it withstands salty sea winds well, making it suitable for windbreak forests that block sea winds. Because it resembles the hackberry, it is also called gaepaengnamu or gombyeongnamu in some areas. The muku tree of Eosan-ri, Jangheung, is estimated to be about 400 years old (at the time of designation), standing 21.5 m tall with a girth of 6.40 m at breast height. It grows in an open space in front of the village; its trunk has many curves, and its base has developed unevenly, like bulging muscles. According to legend, if the tree's leaves bud late or unevenly, the country will be troubled by disease or disaster, whereas if the leaves bud evenly, the country will be at peace and enjoy a bountiful harvest. Every year, on the fifteenth day of the first lunar month, the villagers hold a dangsanje, a rite to the village guardian spirit, praying for national peace, the wellbeing of the people, and a year free of disease. The muku tree of Eosan-ri, Jangheung, has lived for a long time under the interest and care of past generations, and as one of the largest muku trees in Korea, it holds high value for biological conservation. It is therefore designated and protected as a natural monument.
