Zelkova trees are found in warm regions including Korea, Japan, Taiwan and China. Their branches spread out in all directions to form a rounded crown; the flowers bloom in May and the disc-shaped fruit ripens in October. Because of their thick trunks and long lifespans, zelkova trees have long served as pavilion trees offering shade and rest, or as guardian trees (dangsan-namu) protecting and watching over villages. The Saw-leaf Zelkova of Danchon-ri, Yeongpung, is said to be about 700 years old, and stands 16.4 m tall with a girth of 10.3 m. Every year at Chuseok, the autumn harvest festival, the whole village gathers beneath the tree to hold a memorial rite. Revered as the guardian spirit of the village and as the object of prayers for the community's peace and a bountiful harvest each year, the Saw-leaf Zelkova of Danchon-ri, Yeongpung, is a sacred tree of great academic and cultural value, and is accordingly designated and protected as a natural monument.
