The zelkova is found in warm regions including Korea, Japan, Taiwan, and China. Its branches spread out in all directions, giving the tree a rounded form; it blooms in May, and its disc-shaped fruit ripens in October. Because of its thick trunk and long lifespan, it has long been used as a shade tree for resting places, and protected as a dangsan tree that guards and watches over villages. The zelkova of Taejang-ri, Yeongpung, is estimated to be about 600 years old, reaching 18 m in height with a girth of 8.7 m. In 1986, surgical treatment was carried out to remove decayed parts. Every New Year, the whole village gathers before the tree to make wishes and hold a rite, and it is revered as the guardian spirit that protects the village. The zelkova of Taejang-ri, Yeongpung, has lived for a long time under the interest and care of the villagers, and holds high value as scholarly and cultural material. It is therefore designated and protected as a natural monument.
