Oriental white oak grows in China, Taiwan and Japan, and in Korea it is one of the trees that make up the temperate forest. The Oriental White Oak of Byeongsan-ri, Yeongpung, is estimated to be 600 years old, standing 15.0 m tall with a girth at breast height of 3.6 m. Growing on flat ground behind the village, it has had ample room to develop, and its trunk and branches have grown evenly to form a rounded crown. According to tradition, it was planted by Hwang Jeon of the Changwon Hwang clan in 1426, the eighth year of King Sejong of Joseon, when he held the post of Bongnye, a protocol official at Tongnyewon, the royal ceremonies office, with the rank of Seonmurang, though this is not certain. Every year on the fifteenth day of the first lunar month, the villagers gather beneath the oak to hold a rite praying for the peace of the village and a bountiful harvest. Having grown for centuries under the care and protection of past generations, the Oriental White Oak of Byeongsan-ri, Yeongpung, is of great cultural and biological value, and is designated and protected as a natural monument.
