사천 성내리 비자나무 · 泗川 城內里 비자나무

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe Japanese torreya grows south of Naejangsan Mountain in Korea, and in Japan. Prized for its handsome form, it is widely grown as an ornamental tree, and its seeds are used to make an anthelmintic, a remedy for intestinal parasites, and a treatment for constipation, as well as for pressing oil. The Japanese Torreya of Seongnae-ri, Sacheon, is estimated to be about 300 years old (as of its designation), standing 18.0 m tall with a girth at breast height of 4.1 m, its branches spreading out in every direction. It is said to have stood at the main gate of the Gonyang county government office in the Joseon period, and now stands within the grounds of Gonyang Township Office. Although long known as a female tree, some of its branches have reportedly borne male flowers in recent years. About 10 m away stands a small male tree. The Japanese Torreya of Seongnae-ri, Sacheon, has lived under the care and attention of past generations for centuries, and is of high cultural and biological value, and is accordingly designated and protected as a natural monument.
