The bansong, a multi-stem pine, is a type of pine resembling the ordinary pine tree, but it branches into many stems from the base so that there is no distinction between a main trunk and branches, giving the whole tree the shape of an umbrella. Growing in Boan village, Samgong-ri, Muju, this multi-stem pine is estimated to have been about 350 years old at the time of its designation, standing 22.4 m tall with a girth at the base of the trunk of 7.14 m. It is said that a man named Yi Ju-sik (李周植), who lived in this village long ago, transplanted it here from elsewhere about 150 years ago; it is also known as Gucheonsong (九千松), meaning the tree symbolising Gucheondong, and as Manjisong, meaning "the tree with ten thousand branches", for its abundance of branches. The multi-stem pine of Samgong-ri, Muju best displays the characteristics of a bansong, its branches spreading out in all directions like the ribs of a fan, and having grown for so long, it is of great biological conservation value, and it is designated and protected as a natural monument.
