Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krWeeping pines are a rare type of pine tree whose branches hang straight down. Growing on a hillside beside the road leading to Unmunsa Temple, the Weeping Pine Tree of Dongsan-ri, Cheongdo is estimated to be about 200 years old, standing 10.6 m tall with a trunk circumference of 2.2 m at breast height. Its branches droop dramatically downward, giving it a highly distinctive and beautiful form; because the drooping branches resemble those of a willow, it is also called "yusong" (willow pine). According to a story handed down, a state minister was once passing by this tree when its branches suddenly bent down as if making a deep bow, and never rose again. There is also a tale that the tomb of a member of the Goseong Yi clan lies beside the tree, and that the tree was regarded as somehow connected to it, or as sacred in its own right. The Weeping Pine Tree of Dongsan-ri, Cheongdo has a distinctive form and is valuable as folkloric and biological material, and it is designated and protected as a natural monument.
