Chinese Juniper of Jangjeon-ri, Cheongsong
청송 장전리 향나무 · 靑松 長田里 香나무

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe Chinese juniper is found from the central regions of Korea southward, as well as on Ulleungdo Island and in Japan, and is also known as sangnamu or nosongnamu. Because of its strong fragrance, it has long been used as incense burned during ancestral rites, and it is also widely planted as an ornamental tree in gardens and parks. Standing beside the grave of a member of the Yeongyang Nam clan, the Chinese Juniper of Jangjeon-ri, Cheongsong is estimated to be around 400 years old, with a height of 8.0 m and a girth at breast height of 1.8-3.8 m. The trunk rises about 1 m from the ground before dividing into four branches; although the tree itself is not tall, its base is thick and its branches spread widely. Planted beside the grave, the Chinese Juniper of Jangjeon-ri, Cheongsong has lived on for a long time under the care and attention of past generations, and its value as cultural and biological material means it has been designated and protected as a natural monument.
