The Chinese juniper grows in the central and southern regions of Korea, on Ulleungdo Island and in Japan, among other places, and is also known by the names sangnamu and nosongnamu. It has a strong fragrance and its wood is burned as incense at ancestral rites, while the living tree is widely planted as an ornamental species in gardens and parks. The Chinese Juniper of Bongsan-dong, Yeongi is estimated to be about 400 years old. It stands 2.8 m tall, with a girth of 2.56 m at a height of 1 m, and grows beside a private house. Perhaps because it has grown within an enclosed yard, it has failed to gain height despite its 400 years, and its trunk twists this way and that, taking on a form resembling a dragon. Its branches, which spread horizontally in every direction, are held up by several supporting props. According to local tradition, Choe Jung-ryong of the Ganghwa Choe clan, a devoted son, planted this tree when his father died, so as to show his filial devotion to later generations. Villagers believe that when the tree flourishes the whole village enjoys peace, and that when it sickens and weakens, misfortune befalls the village. The Chinese Juniper of Bongsan-dong, Yeongi has survived for centuries under the interest and care of past generations, and its high value as cultural and biological material has led to its designation and protection as a natural monument.
