The Korean Berchemia is a rare species that grows only sparingly in Korea, China and Japan; its yellow autumn foliage is very beautiful, and it generally grows in warm locations. Its power of reproduction is very weak, but once a seedling takes root it grows well. Its leaves are long and oval, and it flowers yellow in June. Its fruit is oval and ripens to red in August. The Korean Berchemia of Songgye-ri, Jewon is estimated to be about 150 years old, standing 15 m tall with a girth of 1.2–1.3 m at chest height. It stands within an experimental forest belonging to Chungbuk National University, on a ridge some distance from the village, so the surrounding area is generally well kept and there appear to be no particular problems regarding its protection; the tree itself is also in good condition. The Korean Berchemia of Songgye-ri, Jewon is a rare tree that has survived for a long time under the interest and care of past generations, and its high value for preservation as biological material has led to its designation and protection as a natural monument.
