Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe evergreen forest of Maengseon-ri, Wando, is a forest about 300m long and 35m wide on a coastal hill on Soando Island. Many large trees stand in the forest, a path runs alongside it, and the shoreline lies directly below where the trees stand. The forest is made up of species such as chinquapin, Japanese evergreen oak, Thunberg's machilus, Japanese cinnamon, wax-leaf privet, eurya, Korean ivy and silverberry. The evergreen forest of Maengseon-ri, Wando, serves as a windbreak against sea winds and as an eobureim, a fish-gathering forest that shelters fish and draws them in close to shore. It offers evidence of the culture by which our ancestors overcame and made use of nature, and as one of Korea's representative evergreen forests it is designated and protected as a Natural Monument.
