The machilus belongs to the laurel family and grows in warm southern island regions such as Jeju Island and Ulleungdo Island; it is also found in Japan, Taiwan and southern China. It grows mainly along coastlines, and its bark and fruit are used as medicinal materials. Because the tree has a majestic and beautiful appearance, it is planted as an ornamental tree in gardens and parks, and also as a windbreak. Growing on a coastal hill, the Machilus of Chudo Island, Tongyeong is estimated to be around 500 years old. It is 12.0 m tall with a trunk circumference at breast height of 5.0 m; the trunk divides partway up, one branch extending horizontally toward the sea and the other growing upward. Around it grow Pittosporum, zelkova, mallotus, paper mulberry and Elaeagnus trees, which together form a windbreak grove. Villagers believe that this tree protects the village. The Machilus of Chudo Island, Tongyeong has lived under the attention and care of the ancestors for a long time, and because of its high folkloric and biological value, it is designated and protected as a natural monument.
