Marsh Plants of Daesong-ri, Haman
함안 대송리 늪지식물 · 咸安 大松里 늪지식물

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe marsh at Daesong-ri, Haman, developed along the Nam River, and is 1.5 to 2 m deep. Marshes and their plant life are disappearing throughout Korea day by day, but the marsh at Daesong-ri has survived to this day because the Gwangju Ahn clan, after settling here, preserved it on the basis of pungsu-jiri, or geomancy, for the prosperity of their descendants. Marsh plants recorded here include Sagittaria aginashi, Hydrocharis dubia, Zizania latifolia, Bolboschoenus fluviatilis, Acorus calamus, Spirodela polyrhiza, Monochoria korsakowii, Juncus effusus, Persicaria species, Trapa incisa, Trapa japonica, Euryale ferox, Ceratophyllum demersum, Ranunculus cantoniensis, Nymphoides peltata, Utricularia japonica and Actinostemma tenerum, together with phytoplankton such as dust algae and diatoms. The marsh plants of Daesong-ri, Haman, mark the only site in Korea designated to protect marsh plants; they are of great value for research on marsh flora, and they also offer a precious glimpse into the outlook with which our ancestors protected this marsh. For these reasons the site is designated and protected as a natural monument.
