Pine Tree of Seorak-dong, Sokcho
속초 설악동 소나무 · 束草 雪嶽洞 소나무

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe Pine Tree of Seorak-dong, Sokcho stands at the entrance from Sokcho into Seorak-dong, and is estimated to be about 500 years old (as of the date of designation). It is 16.8 m tall with a girth of 4.24 m; two large branches that forked from the trunk at a height of 2 m above ground have died, while at 8 m above ground the trunk divides into two large branches. Perhaps because of a legend that piling stones at the base of a tree brings long life, many stones have been piled up near its base. The Seorak-dong Pine Tree has folkloric value as a seonang, a guardian spirit believed to protect the village, and, being an old and large tree, also has high value for biological conservation; it is accordingly designated and protected as a natural monument.
