Pine Tree of Seowon-ri, Boeun
보은 서원리 소나무 · 報恩 書院里 소나무

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe Pine Tree of Seowon-ri, Boeun stands beside a road running along Seowon-ri and the Samgacheon Stream south of Songnisan Mountain, and is estimated to be about 600 years old. The tree has an overall umbrella shape; it is 17.0 m tall, and the trunk, which forks into two at a height of 84 cm, has circumferences at breast height of 2.8 m and 3.8 m respectively. Because it is said to be married to the Jeongipumsong pine at the entrance to Beopjusa Temple, it is also called "Jeongbuinsong," meaning "wife of Jeongipumsong." This is because the Jeongipumsong, growing straight up on a single trunk, is likened to a masculine figure, while this tree's beautiful, umbrella-like spreading form is likened to a feminine one. Villagers hold a rite each year at this pine praying for the peace of the village. Indeed, in 2002 and 2003, an attempt was made to raise a successor tree by pollinating it with pollen from the Jeongipumsong. The Pine Tree of Seowon-ri, Boeun is designated and protected as a natural monument for its high conservation value as folkloric and biological material.
