The Jangsasong grows right in front of Jinheunggul Cave, alongside the path leading up from Seonunsa Temple in Gochang to Dosoram Hermitage. The tree is estimated to be about 600 years old (as of the date of designation), stands 23.6 m tall, and has a trunk circumference at breast height of 3.4 m. At a height of about 3 m the trunk divides into three large branches, which further divide above into many branches spreading out like a fan. People of Gochang call this tree "Jangsasong" or "Jinheungsong." The name Jangsasong derives from Jangsahyeon, the old name for this region, while Jinheungsong comes from its location in front of Jinheunggul Cave, where King Jinheung is said to have practised austerities in the past. The Jangsasong Pine Tree at Dosoram Hermitage of Seonunsa Temple, Gochang has long been cared for by the ancestors; its beautiful shape, good growth condition and rarity as such an old pine tree are recognised as having conservation value, and it is designated and protected as a natural monument.
