The Hyojasong Pine Tree in Okdang-ri, Jangheung grows beside a farm road in front of Okdang-ri village. It is estimated to be about 200 years old (at the time of designation), stands 9.0 m tall, and has a girth of 4.0 m at the base of the trunk. According to a story handed down in the village, about 150 years ago three young men noted for their filial devotion lived here; seeing their aged and frail mother working in the fields on a hot summer day, they resolved to create shade where she could rest, and each planted a tree — a pine, a persimmon and a soatae (bitter-bark tree). Today, however, only the pine remains, growing vigorously. Having lived through some 200 years, the Hyojasong Pine Tree in Okdang-ri, Jangheung has become a wellspring of the spirit of filial devotion, its meaning still passed down today; it is accordingly designated and protected as a natural monument.
