Gusong Pine Tree in Mokhyeon-ri, Hamyang
함양 목현리 구송 · 咸陽 木峴里 九松

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe Gusong Pine Tree in Mokhyeon-ri, Hamyang grows beside a stream about 500 m from the road, and is estimated to be about 300 years old. It is 11.2 m tall, and the trunk, which divides into three at breast height, has circumferences of 2.1 m, 1.7 m and 3.4 m respectively. Because its branches divide into nine (gu) near the base, it is called Gusong, meaning "nine pines"; of these nine, two have died, leaving seven remaining. It is said to have been planted about 300 years ago by the Haksangong branch of the Jinyang Jeong clan, the first of that lineage to settle in this village. The Gusong Pine Tree in Mokhyeon-ri, Hamyang is an uncommon form of pine, and its beautiful shape gives it high value as biological material; it also serves as cultural material revealing the origins of the village, and it is therefore designated and protected as a natural monument.
