Pine Tree of Seonghwang-ri, Uiryeong
의령 성황리 소나무 · 宜寧 城隍里 소나무

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe Pine Tree of Seonghwang-ri, Uiryeong grows on a slope on the hill behind the village, and is estimated to be about 300 years old (as of the date of designation). It is 13.5 m tall with a trunk circumference at breast height of 4.8 m; at a height of 1 to 2.7 m the trunk divides into four branches spreading widely to the sides, though one of these has since died. The origin of the Pine Tree of Seonghwang-ri, Uiryeong is not known, but there is a grave to the north and, at the foot of the hill in front of the village, a shrine of the Nam clan of Uiryeong, so some connection with these is thought likely. It is said that if the branches of this pine and those of another pine about 30 m away should touch, national reunification will come to pass. The Pine Tree of Seonghwang-ri, Uiryeong is an old seonghwang, a guardian tree that has watched over and protected the village, and it has value as folkloric material as well as great value as biological material; it is therefore designated and protected as a natural monument.
