The Ginkgo Tree of Boseoksa Temple is estimated, as of its designation, to be over 1,000 years old. It stands 25.9 m tall with a girth of 10.5 m at breast height, and its base is remarkably covered with countless new shoots that have sprouted to a height of 2 to 3 m. It is said that the tree cries out to give advance warning whenever great calamity is about to befall the village, and it is regarded as a sacred tree that guards and protects the village. This ginkgo is said to have been planted by the monk Jogu together with a disciple around the time Boseoksa Temple was founded, in 885. It is said to have cried out at the time of Liberation in 1945, during the war in 1950, and during the severe drought of 1992. The Ginkgo Tree of Boseoksa Temple, Geumsan, has lived on through the care and attention of ancestors over a long span of time, giving it high value as both folkloric and biological material, and it is therefore designated and protected as a natural monument.
