Gwanbangjerim Forest has been established along the northern bank of the Damyangcheon Stream, which winds around Damyang-eup, with various old, large trees standing in a row along the embankment. The site lies at an elevation of about 500 m. The forest begins at the Dongjeong village in Namsan-ri, Damyang-eup, and runs to Cheonbyeon-ri, Damyang-eup; today it extends further, passing through Hwanggeum-ri in Subuk-myeon all the way to Gangui-ri in Daejeon-myeon. Historically, however, the Gwanbangje embankment itself refers only to the stretch as far as the cattle market in Cheonbyeon-ri, a length of about 2 km. The trees making up Gwanbangjerim include muku trees (111), hackberries (18), cherry trees (9), a castor aralia (1), a hornbeam (1), dogwoods (Cornus macrophylla) and oaks, totalling around 420 trees. Within the area currently designated as a natural monument, 156 old, large trees grow. Tradition holds that the larger trees were planted 300–400 years ago, while the smaller ones were planted in 1854, the fifth year of King Cheoljong, by Hwang Jong-rim, the magistrate of Damyang. Gwanbangjerim Forest, Damyang, is an artificial forest created by building an embankment and planting trees to prevent flood damage. It is designated and protected as a natural monument for its great value as historical and cultural material, revealing our ancestors' wisdom in guarding against natural disasters.
