White forsythia is a rare plant found only in Korea, belonging to the same family as forsythia; like forsythia, its flowers bloom in early spring before the leaves appear. It is low in height, growing to only 1–1.5 m, and its branch tips droop toward the ground in a manner similar to forsythia. The tree's Korean name can be written with the characters 美 ("beautiful") and 扇 ("fan"), reflecting the tree's beauty and its fan-shaped fruit, or with the characters 尾 ("tail") and 扇 ("fan"), because the fan-shaped fruit hangs from the tip of the branch like a tail. This colony of white forsythia is located on hillsides along Jikso Stream and Baekcheon Stream on the Byeonsan Peninsula; the trees are numerous and well preserved. White forsythia is such a rare plant that only a single species exists in the world, growing solely in Korea, and since the Natural Habitat of White Forsythias, Buan, marks the southern limit of its range, it is designated and protected as a natural monument.
