Sanbangsan Mountain is a 395m volcanic peak on the south-western tip of Jeju Island, west of Hwasun Harbour. Shaped like a bell, it has a summit thickly covered with plants that thrive in its mild climate, while rare species that cling to bare rock grow on its cliffs. Plants found in the rock wall plant zone of Sanbangsan Mountain include coastal species such as sweet chinquapin (Castanopsis sieboldii), silver-leaf litsea (Neolitsea sericea), Japanese machilus (Machilus thunbergii), yabu cinnamon (Cinnamomum yabunikkei), actinodaphne (Actinodaphne lancifolia), Japanese pittosporum (Pittosporum tobira) and Japanese litsea (Litsea japonica), together with rock-dwelling species such as the centipede orchid (Cleisostoma scolopendrifolium), wind orchid (Neofinetia falcata) and dendrobium (Dendrobium moniliforme). The rare rock-wall plants of the Sanbangsan Mountain rock wall plant zone in Jeju are a valuable resource for academic research, and the site is therefore designated and protected as a Natural Monument.
