The evergreen forest of Andeokgyegok Valley lies along a road on the south-western side of Jeju Island. It comprises some 300 species of plants, including sweet chinquapin (Castanopsis sieboldii), silver-leaf litsea (Neolitsea sericea), Japanese machilus (Machilus thunbergii), evergreen oak (Quercus acuta), kadsura vine (Kadsura japonica), pepper vine (Piper kadsura), oleaster (Elaeagnus glabra) and ternstroemia (Ternstroemia gymnanthera). Various kinds of ferns also grow here, along with rare species such as elaeocarpus (Elaeocarpus sylvestris) and resurrection lily (Lycoris squamigera). Blessed with an exceptional natural environment, Andeokgyegok Valley appears to have been well suited as a place to live since prehistoric times, and it is also a historic site where many scholars, including Kim Jeong-hui (pen name Chusa), once stayed. Because the evergreen forest of Andeokgyegok Valley in Jeju is home to many rare plants and remains a primeval forest in an almost untouched natural state, it is of great academic value and is designated and protected as a Natural Monument.
