The subtropical forest of Cheonjeyeon lies along a valley running south, about 500m west of Jungmun-dong in Seogwipo. Here, plants native to a mild climate zone grow so densely that they form a thick forest. The species that make up this forest include the rare whisk fern (Psilotum nudum), together with coral ardisia (Ardisia crenata), sarcandra (Sarcandra glabra), elaeocarpus (Elaeocarpus sylvestris), sweet chinquapin (Castanopsis sieboldii), isu tree (Distylium racemosum), silver-leaf litsea (Neolitsea sericea), Japanese blue oak (Quercus myrsinifolia), mochi tree (Ilex integra), pepper vine (Piper kadsura), Asian jasmine (Trachelospermum asiaticum), kadsura vine (Kadsura japonica) and creeping fig (Ficus thunbergii). At the centre of the forest stands the 23m-high Cheonjeyeon Falls, of which legend tells that heavenly maidens once descended to bathe. The subtropical forest around Cheonjeyeon Falls in Jeju is one of Korea's representative evergreen forests, rich in rare and subtropical plants, and is a valuable resource for academic study; it is therefore designated and protected as a Natural Monument.
