Pine Tree of Jeokseok-ri, Goesan
괴산 적석리 소나무 · 槐山 積石里 소나무

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis pine tree stands at the top of a hill pass in Ipseok village and is estimated to be about 500 years old (as of the date of designation). At 17.2 m tall with a girth of 3.8 m at chest height, it resembles the Jeongipum Pine of Songnisan Mountain in form, but its trunk leans at an angle of about 5 degrees toward the top. The upper part of the trunk shows the reddish colour characteristic of red pine, while the bark on the lower part is thick. Its branches extend out evenly in all directions. This tree had already been growing at the entrance to the village before Ipseok village came into being some 400 years ago. The pine that once stood at Guksadang, where the village's communal rite was held, has since died, and this tree alone has survived to serve as the village's guardian spirit. The Pine Tree of Jeokseok-ri, Goesan has been cared for by past generations across a long span of time, and it holds high value as folkloric and biological material; it is accordingly designated and protected as a Natural Monument.
