Dangcheomuldonggul Lava Tube lies about 27 km east of Jeju City. Formed by volcanic activity roughly 320,000 years ago, it lies about 3 m below the surface and has no entrance, so it has never been exposed to the outside and its original form has been preserved intact. Although it is a lava tube, secondary mineral deposits formed by the lime content of shell sand accumulated on the ground above give the cave the appearance of a limestone cave. Cave formations have developed with great beauty, including icicle-like stalactites, stalagmites rising from the floor, and stone pillars formed where stalactites and stalagmites meet; in particular, long, slender stalactites and pillar-shaped formations have developed extensively throughout the cave. Dangcheomuldonggul is currently designated a restricted-access area to protect its formations, and entry for management or research purposes requires the permission of the Korea Heritage Service Administrator.
