The serrateleaf pearlbush grows on mountain slopes and in valleys; its branches are reddish-brown and hairless, and it flowers in April and May. The Korean name's first element appears to derive from a word meaning to hem or sew with thread, since the fruit's ovary is divided into several chambers, each looking as though stitched together with thread or cord. The second element of the name appears to come from the birch tree, known for its hard wood. This population once formed a very large stand, with about 280 trees within a straight-line distance of 500 m and some 300 more within 3 km, but the number of individuals has fallen markedly since the time of designation. Most of the trees are 2–3 m tall and grow along the edge of the forest. In Korea a single species and a single variety of the serrateleaf pearlbush grow. It is known to be distributed mainly in the central and northern regions, and Deokcheon-ri in Imsil County, in the southern part of the country, marks the southern limit of its distribution, making it valuable data for the geography of plant distribution. The Population of Serrateleaf Pearlbushes in Deokcheon-ri, Imsil is an extremely rare, large-scale stand growing in the southern region, and is designated and protected as a natural monument for its high value to plant distribution studies.
