진주 유수리 백악기 하성퇴적층 · 晋州 柳樹里 白堊紀 河成堆積層

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe Cretaceous Fossil Site in Yusu-ri, Jinju was uncovered in the streambed of the Gahwacheon, one of the tributaries of the Nam River in Jinju. In a fossil locality some 150 m wide and 2 km long, formed about 100 million years ago through the deposit of sediment by water and wind, more than 100 dinosaur bones were found, including limb-bone fossils, toe bones and pelvic-bone fossils. Various other fossils were also discovered, including ancient soil layers, fossilised tree stumps, fossil charcoal, and trace fossils left by the everyday activity of past organisms. The Cretaceous fluvial sedimentary layer of Yusu-ri, Jinju is the site where the largest number of dinosaur bone fossil fragments has been found anywhere in Korea, and it is valuable material for research into the dinosaurs' habitat environment and the process of fossilisation. ※ The name was changed from "Cretaceous Fossil Locality in Yusu-ri, Jinju" to "Cretaceous Fluvial Sedimentary Layer in Yusu-ri, Jinju" (announced on 26 July 2021).
