Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krA sand beach refers to a place formed by the flat, wide accumulation of sand. The Sand Beach at Sagot Cape on Baengnyeongdo Island, Ongjin lies along the coast to the southwest and southeast of Yonggipo Wharf on Baengnyeongdo Island. At first glance it appears to be made of sand, but it is in fact a coast formed by a thick accumulation of quartzite powder; at low tide, a beach 4 km long and 300 m wide is exposed. The grains that make up the beach are extremely small, and the gaps between them are so tiny that they form a very firm sand layer. The beach is as hard as a concrete floor, allowing vehicles to pass over it, and during the Korean War it is said to have been used by UN forces as a natural airfield. Together with a similar site in Naples, Italy, the Sand Beach at Sagot Cape on Baengnyeongdo Island is one of only two places in the world with this particular kind of terrain and geology. * The name was changed from "Sand Beach (Natural Air Field) at Sagot Cape on Baengnyeongdo Island, Ongjin" to "Sand Beach at Sagot Cape on Baengnyeongdo Island, Ongjin" (announced 26 July 2021).
