Peridotite Xenolith-Bearing Basalt in Jinchon-ri, Baengnyeongdo Island, Ongjin
옹진 백령도 진촌리 맨틀포획암 분포지 · 甕津 白翎島 鎭村里 맨틀捕獲巖 分布地

This site lies on the coast about 1.3 km east of Jinchon-ri, Baengnyeong-myeon, on Baengnyeongdo Island, where a lava layer formed along the shoreline contains yellow peridotite masses 5–10 cm in diameter. The lava layer is more than 10 m thick and consists of black basalt. The peridotite xenoliths formed when peridotite, produced tens of kilometres beneath the Earth's surface, was carried upward together with erupting lava, and they provide very important data for studying conditions deep underground. In Korea, sites where such mantle xenoliths occur are limited to Jeongok and Pyeongtaek in Gyeonggi-do, the area around Cheorwon in Gangwon State, Ulleungdo Island, and Jeju Island. ※ The name was changed from "Ongjin Baengnyeongdo Island Jinchon-ri Peridotite Xenolith-Bearing Basalt Distribution Area" to "Peridotite Xenolith-Bearing Basalt in Jinchon-ri, Baengnyeongdo Island, Ongjin" (announced 26 July 2021).
